Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Rauscher.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My Grandfather on my Mom’s side was a Barber and then became a Hair Stylist. He along with my 2 Uncles, 3 cousins, my Brother and my Sister were all at one point hair Stylist. I decided in High School that if my Grandfather can raise 5 kids. I could make a living in the Hair Industry. My brother owned New Horizons for 5 years and then decided to follow warm weather and move to Arizona. So I bought him out. 31 years and 2 expansions later. We’re the largest Salon in the area. My success comes from a very supportive wife and 3 kids, surrounding myself with amazing people, patience, and a great sense of humor. You have to be a little crazy to sustain anything for this amount of time. Though the Hair Industry has changed in many ways and not necessarily for the better, I love my job, Every day is different and I change peoples lives for the better physically and mentally.
Has it been a smooth road?
We’ve been fortunate and blessed to go survive a few downturns in our 36 years. Navigating the right business decisions and sacrificing personally, financially and with my time. We overcame it all. We built careers here where Stylist can afford to prosper. The trouble for the past decade is the Corporate world has squeezed the professionalism out of the hair industry. Through turning our salon only professional product lines to “over the counter” products, and pay scales that couldn’t support a self-sufficient living. We compete with $7.00 haircut places with 100% turn over. Salons are missing craftsmanship, and client/relationship building, because we’re not treated as Licensed professionals. The impact we have on everyday lives is amazing and sincerely rewarding. We’ve truly earned the respect for what we’ve chosen as a career. I’d be a different looking world today without passionate hairstylist like the ones at New Horizons.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with New Horizons Salon Spa & Tan – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We do it all Color, Cuts, Styling, Texture, Tanning, Massage, Waxing, Nails, Facials, Spray Tanning, Extensions…One stop shopping. Our talent in all areas is incredible. I’m most proud of our customer service. We treat all of our guests like friends. People always say how friendly and how comfortable we make them feel at our salon. Having anything done to your Hair, Nails, and Body is personal…we take that very seriously. Our knowledge is what sets us apart, there is nothing we haven’t seen. Most of our staff has been in the industry for 10 plus years. Our years of experience beats any salon. Yet our prices are extremely reasonable. Along the lines of the national average adding true value to any service, you’ll receive.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
People always ask me… why Chicago? The weather is less than desirable and the cost of doing business is at the very least, challenging. But, I’m in the people business. People in the area and around us are awesome. They’re hard-working people just like us. They’re quietly trendy, The mix of styles from basic layers to shaved sides with Purple highlights make for fun and exciting. I wouldn’t do what I do in any other place in the country.
