Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Adams.
Jill, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My career began in 1982 when I graduated from the Military with a degree in combat medicine and nursing. I knew my passion was helping others. Therefore, I began a journey in pursuing my educational goals in becoming a Nurse Practitioner.
I first graduated from Ivy Tech in Indianapolis with a degree in Practical Nursing (LPN) in 1983. I continued my education at Purdue University in Lafayette Indiana and graduated with a Baccalaureate degree in Science and Nursing in 1997. After a few years of practicing, I then attended Indiana University and graduated with a dual-Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry and Primary Care. My belief is to treat the whole person- mind and body for health and wellness. Therefore, I carved out the first combined Psychiatric Mental Health-Primary Care Program at Indiana University
I have been a Psychiatric Mental Health Primary Care Nurse Practitioner now for thirteen years. I practiced with a group of other Psychiatrists and Psychiatric Health Care Providers for approximately eight years until I decided it was time I had a practice of my own. Therefore, I began Psychiatric, Health & Wellness in 2014.
As many people know who have their own practice, there are many growing pains, long days and unexpected trials. However, helping others is very rewarding! I love what I do and feel blessed God has given me special gifts and talents to help others in a time of need.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I wish I could say it has been “smooth sailing” however, many business owners know this is not reality. When I relocated my practice, I had to end up moving twice due to building safety issues. Ramping up the practice took much longer than expected.
Learning all new administrative/business tasks has been daunting to say the least. In the beginning, I had to perform everything including: billing insurance, collections, learning different codes, familiarize myself with insurance contracts, designing a website, setting up new patient documents, establishing a solid team of business players (accountant, collection attorney, business attorney, medical malpractice attorney) and business mentors. I believe for a person to be successful she must surround herself with a great team of experienced, educated individuals.
I think one of the most challenging tasks are to continually update my business plan, projections and goals. To keep expectations realistic. Most importantly, not to lose sight of my passion and why I chose to do what I do.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Psychiatric, Health & Wellness – what should we know?
I practice mostly Psychiatry. Although a certain amount of Primary Care is involved in many of my daily decisions regarding patient care. I evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe medications (or supplements) for Psychiatric Disorders.
I specialize in ADHD, Depression and Anxiety. I am most proud of spending time with patients, listening to them and truly caring about their needs.
My advanced degrees in both Psychiatry and Primary Care sets me apart from most all other Health Care Providers. Many Providers are known for “symptom chasing.” I am known for getting to the “root” of the cause of illness or imbalance. I often combine traditional medicine with alternative medicine when planning a patient’s treatment.
