Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessie Barber.
Jessie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been part of and working in the tattoo industry for many years and eventually found cosmetic tattooing to be the perfect mix of art and beauty for my interests. In January 2017, I became certified at the Advanced Permanent Cosmetics Academy and began tattooing full time in the city of Chicago.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting any business is difficult — there are hard days and there are days that feel like sunshine and rainbows. The biggest learning curve for me has been building a clientele in a market with changing advertising avenues. Yelp and Instagram have been huge in growing my business and they’re both much different than traditional advertising. I will say that I am extremely lucky to have the best clients I could ever ask for!
Please tell us about Micro Penny Cosmetic Tattoo.
I am a cosmetic tattooer and I focus on microblading. Microblading is a form of tattooing in which I use a hand tool (not a machine!) to create hair stroke-like lines in the eyebrow area to give the illusion of fuller, shapelier brows. this is an excellent solution for people with alopecia, hair loss, or those who simply want to be able to have full eyebrows without makeup.
I’m most proud of the work that I do. I’m rewarded constantly by having great clients who find me via word of mouth. I do believe people find comfort in me as a technician given my history in art and tattooing — and I do think there is an element of youthful awareness to current trends and styles that plays into why clients come to see me. I show my work and portfolio clearly and cleanly online and it resonates in everything that I make at Micro Penny Cosmetic Tattoo.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I honestly don’t think I would start a thing. I have been extremely lucky to have mentors in my industry who are very talented and open to discussing ways to improve and grow. Everything that has gotten me to this point has been a learning experience and I’ve loved every second of it!
