Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jessica and Dr. Chris Schumann.
Jessica and Chris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Dr. Jessica Schumann graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Movement and Exercise Science. She graduated with high honors from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA. Dr. Jessica had a strong desire to become a Chiropractor since high school. It was in high school that she not only experienced symptomatic relief from chronic, persistent headaches following consistent Chiropractic care but also achieved personal athletic goals in her track and field career. At Palmer, Dr. Jessica was a part of the Troxell Intern Program, which helped her to focus on becoming proficient using the Gonstead system of analysis for Chiropractic care. Dr. Jessica has also done the extended learning for family wellness and pediatric care.
Dr. Chris Schumann graduated from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. He had always had an interest in human physiology, nutrition, and exercise. He was initially on track to attend physical therapy school before shadowing a Chiropractor and learning about the science, philosophy, and art of the Chiropractic profession. Dr. Chris also attended Palmer where he graduated as valedictorian of his class. At Palmer, he focused on learning the Gonstead system while simultaneously working as an intern devoted to extremity care and sports/work injuries.
After working at separate offices in Iowa, Dr. Jessica and Dr. Chris took over New Horizons Family Chiropractic in 2015. This office is a great fit for them as it had previously been established as a family wellness office with a background using the Gonstead system. Although they work with everything from automobile accident cases to sporting injuries, Dr. Jessica and Dr. Chris continue to emphasize the importance of whole family wellness at New Horizons Family Chiropractic.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As with any business, there are always high and low points. For us, we look at any struggle as an opportunity to grow and become stronger. The greatest hurdle that we face is a challenge with the public’s approach towards health. Most individuals in our society have a reactive approach to healthcare. In other words, the American society has developed a culture filled with destructive health choices, which continue until there are symptoms associated with a problem. It is our burning desire to educate our community regarding true health by being proactive and how Chiropractic fits into a wellness lifestyle.
First, we use the Gonstead system of analysis. This system allows us as doctors to be very in-depth, analytical, and specific. Second, our focus is educating our patients towards wellness for the entire family. Although most of our patients start at our office because of a specific health concern, many soon realize that Chiropractic care, in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, helps to prevent health problems before they start. Our patients have ranged from two weeks old to ninety-seven years old. Third, we have extended training in extremity care. Whether it is helping an athlete bounce back from a sprained ankle or an office worker suffering from wrist discomfort, specific Chiropractic adjustments have helped many of our patients recover quickly without the need for surgery.
New Horizons Family Chiropractic – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Chiropractic as a profession works by removing nervous system interference by adjusting individual segments of the spine. The nervous system transports messages between the brain and every part of a human’s body. This interference can negatively influence a person’s health by causing tension and stiffness in a person’s muscles and ligaments, reducing function to organs and glands, and/or causing pain and discomfort to many areas of the body. At New Horizons Family Chiropractic, there are many areas that set us apart from other healthcare practitioners.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We measure our success by health and happiness. We got into the Chiropractic profession to help out as many individuals and families as possible become as healthy and happy as possible. Therefore, we feel successful when we can help somebody reach their health goals. Not only can we help people successfully reach their goals using our professional passion and skill, but we have a job that brings us happiness each and every day.
