Meet Jessica Borowicz of The Derm in Glenview

Today we’d like to introduce you to jessica borowicz.

jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Originally from Michigan, I started my education at Michigan State University getting a bachelor’s degree in human biology. I went to medical school in Erie, PA at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine where I obtained my osteopathic medical degree. I always had a unique fascination with skin. I grew up having to visit the dermatologist for skin ailments of my own, so I knew early on that I wanted to become a dermatologist. The field of dermatology has the perfect mix of medical, surgical and cosmetic medicine. Plus dermatology offers a nice work/life balance for a physician that is primarily office based. I did my dermatology residency training at Largo Medical Center in Largo, FL. Living and training in Florida for six years was invaluable experience as a young dermatologist but my midwest roots drew me back and I settled in Chicago in 2011 when I joined The Derm.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Becoming a physician is never an easy journey. It takes four years of undergraduate college, four years of medical school, one year of internship and three years of dermatology residency for a total of 12 years of college training to become a dermatologist. Include three medical school step exams and one specialty board exam to become a board-certified dermatologist. Dermatology is one of the most competitive medical specialties that takes much sacrifice and dedication. Most dermatologists are at the top of their class academically, perform the highest on board exams all while doing additional research, writing papers, doing dermatology rotations, going to dermatology conferences and professionally networking with dermatologists and dermatology residents to increase the chances of getting into one of the few esteemed dermatology residencies. I sacrificed going to friend’s & families weddings, I missed the birth of my nephew, I missed out on holidays, I never went on vacation, I lived off loans until my 30’s, and I have school debt equivalent to a house mortgage. In the end it was all worth it. I am fortunate and blessed to be doing a job that I love. I wouldn’t change it for a thing.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with the derm – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a board-certified dermatologist that treats skin, hair and nail conditions. I do medical dermatology, meaning I treat common skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, warts, rashes, hair loss, skin infections, mole checks and so much more. I also do surgical dermatology with treatment of skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Lastly, I do cosmetic dermatology including neurotoxin injections (Botox/Dysport/Xeomin), dermal filler injections (Restylane/Juvederm/Radiesse/Sculptra), laser treatments, minimally and non-invasive fat reduction with Kybella and Coolsculpting, PRP injections (Platelet Rich Plasma) and customized antiaging skin care treatments. Although my practice is full-service and I balance my day with a mix of all patient types, my office is known in the community for the cosmetic services we offer. There’s an art and a science to treating a cosmetic patient allows me to utilize my creativity along with my knowledge of dermatology.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future involve personal growth. I’ve focused my early adult life on my education and career, now it’s time to focus on myself. I’m balancing my love for work with exploring the world and traveling. I hope to see more of this beautiful planet and have plans to travel to places such as Belize and Anguilla. I plan to continue to grow and develop my business through my personal brand and excellent patient care.
