Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Duranski.
Jenny has been an advocate and a voice for the Green Beauty world for the better part of 8 years. She became ill working in a traditional nail salon and went on her own personal journey to find better products with better ingredients not only for her, but for her clients and Mother Earth. She has lobbied in Washington DC for better and safer regulations on cosmetics, and has been a proponent of the green beauty movement in Chicago. Jenny started the first and still the only non toxic nail salon in Chicago called Noktivo a little over four years ago. She was flooded out of her shop on Damen and thus began the birthing of Lena Rose. Lena Rose opened in winter of 2016 right next to the Fransisco Brown Line stop. Lena Rose is first to market in Chicago as the only Green Beauty Boutique and spa.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest obstacle has been getting the word out that we are a new small business in a big city. Trying to educate people on greener, cleaner options has been an uphill battle when customers are stuck in their beauty routines and regimens that aren’t so “green”. At Lena Rose, we aim to give customers the opportunity to make informed and intentional buying decisions. What you put on and in your body is so important.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lena Rose Natural Beauty story. Tell us more about the business.
We are hyper local and about 75% of the products we carry in store are made right here in Chicago. We are proudly woman owned and operated and 20% of our monthly profits are donated to local charities. We believe Green Beauty should be accessible to everyone on any budget. At Lena Rose, we like to give a client a completely customized experience. All of our product in store is used in our facial room, so a client who would like to try a specific brand can do so. We can tailor any of our services to meet a client’s standards, whether that is vegan, allergies and sensitivities or scent preference. We offer Organic Facials, Natural Nails and Waxing. We also host events at our space from birthdays to bachelorette parties and we also host a quarterly Green Girls Night Out which includes pampering and of course lots of bubbly!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
With Lena Rose, it has all happened by tiny strokes of luck. Our shop happened by chance as our founder was walking past one day and saw people leaving with boxes to the lovely ladies who work with diligence and intelligence to make Lena Rose what she is. Our staff has all known Jenny by chance whether that was coming into her first shop Nokitvo or by the many odd run ins. Our team is compiled by the luck and the chance of the universe.
