Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenifer Mersman.
Jenifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began in high school and college, working for a Chiropractor doing massage, and at a young age, I fell in love with helping people feel better! I worked for Mario Tricoci doing massage and spa treatments and later became an esthetician. Realizing I needed more knowledge to help others, I went back to school to become a surgical technician and took a private job with an Orthopedic surgeon. Working in surgery, I wanted to help people in an alternative way, to keep them out of the hospital, off pain medication, and decrease there healing time. More interest in women’s health and pain management made me look into going back to school for more input and knowledge. So, at 32 years old, I went back, finished my bachelors in science, and continued on to receive 2 doctorates, 1 in Naturopathic medicine and the other in Chiropractic medicine. 10 years later, I have opened my own clinic that allows me to utilize all my skills in helping people with individualized care. Everything from spa type therapies, skin care, water treatments, & massage to whole health medicine like acupuncture, Naturopathic, and Chiropractic medicine. In addition, I am becoming more involved in licensure for Naturopathic doctors in Illinois.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
HAHAHA! YES. When I began massage there was no licensure in Illinois. It was a free for all! Plus I had to take more hours than what’s recommended today, and multiple licenses were required when it started. There were limited jobs, and the reputation of the massage parlor was still there. Going through the same thing now with licensure for Naturopathic doctors in Illinois. The fight is worth my passion to help people in a natural and safe way.
Please tell us about Mersman Wellness.
I would say my experience and energy is what sets me apart from others. The love I have for holistic and alternative care, done in a safe and controlled environment. My company is still small and personalized, concierge care. I take time with each patient to find out all about them, what their needs are, and the root cause of the illness. I combine my 28 years of experience with a medicine of all forms.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Would have gotten my doctorates earlier to help more people. No regrets in life, everything that seemed to be a problem was just the universe sending me in a better direction.
