Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Nixon.
In 1998, Brian Sutherland set out to create a new kind of technology services firm that was less “big business” and more tuned into the thoughts, feelings and emotions of its team members and clients. Brian had been the subject of many mergers and acquisitions that left him feeling unsure of his future and emotionally exhausted. So, he started Highland Solutions in Chicago with the idea that people came first and that those working for the firm and those we worked with could express their thoughts and feelings freely knowing those around them could be trusted and relied-upon. And while the company has changed over the years, the core values of the firm remain unchanged. Trust, integrity, collaboration, intelligence/curiosity, competence, reliability and a focus on people first remain the cornerstones of who we are today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
While we have seen continued growth over the years, it has not always been a smooth road. We have had to deal with market issues that all businesses face (e.g. the meltdown in 2007) and have had to adjust our business model to meet the ever-changing needs and desires of our clients. We have also had to level-up our expectations of our team members and their skills as we have grown. This has been necessary and has caused us to become an even more powerful learning organization. We utilize our experiences with clients, partners and ourselves to shape our thinking and to keep us moving forward as evidenced by our innovation, process improvements and long-standing relationships with clients and partners. We look to provide continuous value to those we work with and remain humble and grateful for these relationships.

Highland Solutions is a unique business and has grown to become a digital transformation technology partner for those that we serve. If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think we would have done anything differently as all of our team members tend to believe in the idea of embracing our journey, both professionally and personally. All great stories of humankind have a common element found within them. And that is the idea of always moving forward. If we embrace our journey as pre-determined and allow ourselves to live it in the fullest possible way, we allow ourselves to keep moving forward towards our ultimate destiny. At Highland, we embrace our journey as a company so that we and our clients keep adapting, adjusting and moving forward.
