Today we’d like to introduce you to James Greenspon.
James, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It pretty much started when I was 6 or 7 years old, and someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up. I thought a moment and decided I wanted to be like my dad, who was also a physician. I would often accotmpany him on trips to the hospital (where I waited in the nurse’s station) or on house calls (where I’d wait in the car). I always enjoyed being with him because no matter where he went, someone always recognized him and would start talking to him. My father, Dr. Irwin, started the practice in 1949. I joined him after completing my residency in Phoenix, AZ in 1988. We enjoyed each other’s company, and I learned some of the old ways of practicing medicine and blended it along with the current approaches. Although my father was a general practitioner doing everything from obstetrics and surgery to general medicine in the 1950-60’s, he had gradually gotten into nutritional counseling and weight loss.
This side of the business turned out to be the most popular as time went on. When I arrived, I began offering more Family Practice services to go with the nutritional counseling as I saw there was good patient flow. I also had a new office building constructed in 1993 seeing that the added space would allow future growth and the hiring of employees which he never had. We now employ a nurse practitioner, and will soon have two when another nurse (who has been here 12 years) completes her FNP program, along with several more RNs. In 2016 we opened a north side location in Northfield, IL and are offering esthetic services from certified nurse injectors at both offices. I never envisioned having more than once office but am open to see where the future takes us.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Actually the hardest part of growing the practice initially was finding good employees before the days of the internet. I was lucky in 1993 when a temp agency sent me a bright eyed, intelligent, and pretty girl that was only 20 years old. She was so dependable and picked up skills so quick, that she was my only employee till 2004. Of course, she is still here going on 25 years, and brought her sister in 2005 who has since become an RN and will be completing her FNP program next year. I really have been fortunate to have such nice ladies all these years. The practice has very little turn over or drama and there is a great sense of togetherness.
Please tell us about Greenspon Medical.
Our practice is known for nutritional counseling and family practice plus a more recent addition of esthetics for anyone seeking to retain youthfulness. I am most proud of the devoted ladies that provide services to the clients, getting to know them over time and deliver the desired care.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Really nothing! I couldn’t have found better people to work here or had a more caring and interesting father to have left such a legacy to me!
