Meet Jacqueline Frole of J.A.C.K.I.E.L.A.N.D in Logan Square

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Frole.

Jacqueline, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I relocated to Chicago about 3 years ago after a life on the east coast (New Jersey, New York, and Providence), because I was really interested in the art/theater/comedy scene and wanted to try someplace new. But I didn’t know anyone and needed money. I had a degree in graphic design so just fell back into that line of work, designing websites and emails at marketing agencies.

And then one evening after a long day staring at pixels, I just sort of snapped and made a cheeseburger out of paper mâché! From there, “J.A.C.K.I.E.L.A.N.D” was born. I began creating and sharing more handmade paper mâché sculptures and stop-motion animations, creating a character of myself who was full of delusional confidence (honestly, not too far removed from actuality) and unrequited success.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have always been restless when it comes to jobs. I worked as a teacher, a dog wrangler, a carpenter, a radio producer, a barista, a marketing consultant, and much more. But I realized that if you want to be something, then you just have to do it. I recently found my passion in the set, props and experiential design and I’m not looking back. You can’t wait for permission, you just have to make things happen for yourself and people will follow.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about J.A.C.K.I.E.L.A.N.D – what should we know?
I specialize in handmade props, sets and experiential design. I especially love creating things with lumps and bumps, very obviously made with the human hand. Everything has become so clean and minimal. I can make that stuff too, but I’m never as happy with it in the end.

I also feel my background in design and marketing sets me apart from other artists. I can take all that advertising lingo and frame it around a wild idea in a way that wins over new business for clients, especially if they want to do something different and fun.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A sense of humor. Everyone is so serious, especially in the design and art world, it’s such a breath of fresh air to meet someone funny.
