Meet Jackie Graff, MA, LCPC of Graff Counseling in Western Suburbs of Chicago

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Graff, MA, LCPC.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jackie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
When I was finishing up my undergraduate degree, I was interning at a women’s shelter. I was a court advocate and spent many days working with women in the courts of Chicago. I also was in the process of looking into law schools and preparing to take the LSAT. However, after working with women one on one, I felt a stronger connection to the service and compassion piece of this job. At times, I was the only person they had; the one person they were counting on. That led the way to finish up my Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and begin Graduate school in Counseling. I received my Master’s Degree in 2006, and worked with many providers, facilities, and practices along the way in order to complete training, education, and experience to open my own practice in 2015! My focus has remained the same. While I treat and see several conditions, I tend to focus on women’s issues and concerns.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been some struggles along the way. People say to me all of the time: “I don’t know how you do what you do.” and “I could never do that.” A very important piece of being a therapist is self-care and I have learned that along the way. If I am not at my best, I cannot treat my clients effectively.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As a family therapist, I treat women and families struggling with mental health and other concerns. While I do treat anxiety, depression, OCD, eating disorders and self-injury, I also see clients simply struggling with everyday concerns. This can range from communication with a partner, parenting techniques, or grief and loss. Therapy is an exploration of yourself and healing, regardless of a diagnosis. I also treat children ages 6 and up, and include their families in this process, as I think family involvement and support is essential for a child to thrive and grow.

Additionally, I provide mental health screenings, training, and workshops throughout the suburbs of Chicago. Some are offered at my locations, but I also travel to companies, facilities, and schools to raise community awareness for mental health. Contact me for more info if you are thinking of scheduling an appointment or would like more information!

What were you like growing up?
I have always been “a helper.” In Kindergarten, I received the “best helper” award and my teacher said, “she is always there to clean up after a snack!” I am the youngest of 7 and always had (still do) family around. Family and friends and staying connected to them are very important to me and I believe a big part of who I am today.
