Today we’d like to introduce you to J. Wesley Johnson III.
J. Wesley, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It all started at Rich South High School in Richton Park, after being cut from both the Freshman A and B team because the Assistant Coach, (who was my neighbor across the street) told me I was too small to play. I began to get in the weight room and practice basketball daily in my drive way. My mom once yelled out of the window just before dinner telling me to make all the baskets then come inside to eat. As a child up until, I would never have thought about it until she said it, but in basketball and in, life if you really, really concentrate you can make all of them:
In early professional years, John has operated an independent multi-line insurance agency in Colorado and Illinois. As a sales leader in the state of Colorado, it was the same month the he was awarded the #1 Variable Life Sales Agent in the company covering 19 states when he decided that he wanted to pursue greater opportunities in business. One year later, he started a consulting company.
Originally from Chicago, IL, John’s passion for the sport of basketball drove him to complete four full seasons of college basketball. During his college journey, he experienced personal and school records with points scored in a season, 3-pointers made, and most games won in school history as an All-Conference player. He obtained his Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts, then his Bachelor’s Degree in Art History and Design. As a student athlete, he was fortunate to also collect a pair of Collegiate Championships from both institutions! Beyond college, John embraced a four-year professional basketball career and experienced culture in over half of the continents on the planet. The game of basketball and his desire to serve others positioned him to play the sport throughout North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Mexico. While playing and spending time abroad, his passion for influencing youth and young men found him serving on the Board of Directors for Crossover International and Basketball Club International, as well as other domestic local nonprofits.
When John decided to retire from the game of basketball as a player, he then settled back in the U.S. in Denver, Colorado, and started, from the ground up, a minor league professional basketball team named Colorado Crossover, which competed in the IBL for two seasons. His motivation for starting the team was to give young men an opportunity to accomplish their life dreams to experience the game at greater levels. John’s dual residency of Colorado and Illinois has not prevented him from staying active in his communities.
As a writer, The Drunk Dial is his first published book. However, it is not the first one that he has written. John spent a few months traveling at the age of 36 to research and gather the information and data required to complete the book. Throughout his working career, along the journey, he has consulted individuals and organizations on many different levels.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am just now learning that rarely anything big happens exactly when you want it to or exactly how you want it to. Understanding perseverance and patience with poise is the key to overcoming objectives.
Challenges come in a variety of forms but it is who we are in the process that shape us to either keep trucking through the rough roads ahead or to turn around and go back the other way.
I would say for not just myself but for many that the biggest obstacle is simply making the right Choices, right in the heat of the moment. Certain small moments determine the entire course of the rest of life.
