Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Tillotson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had been shooting video since I was 13, went to film school, dropped out and went into sales. I sold cars, knives, real estate, I was even a loan officer for a few years. In 2009 I was coming off of a failed real estate development company I owned. The recession swallowed me whole. I went right into hustle mode like I always had and tried to figure out what I could sell the easiest. At that time I saw that brands were starting to use YouTube to promote themselves. I also found myself gravitating away from watching TV to watching content online. With that being said my logic was, I know business, I know what looks good and I knew that branded online content was the future. I started Indirap with the last $1,200 I had. I bought a camera with 2 crappy lenses off of Ebay and started calling companies out the back of magazines selling branded video content. Anything from Fortune 500 companies to fitness brands to real estate brands. I didn’t care because I knew they needed my product. I built a portfolio up over the first 3 years consistently investing in new film tech, computer gear and more digital marketing bandwidth. I hired my first employee Tyler Mose in December of 2012. He was a guy I thought could sell the heck out of my product and was also extremely passionate marketing and advertising. From there the brand doubled its size and revenue year after year. Now we’re going on 8 years in business with a client list we’re extremely proud of, a team that I wouldn’t trade for the world and a reputation money can’t buy. What I am most proud of is the fact that our product has played a part in some amazing growth for all of the brands that we work with.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s always fun for me, every day. Any challenges are an opportunity to find new solutions that in turn take the business to the next level. I don’t ever dwell on problems or struggles. My focus as an owner/operator is always to just make the Indirap brand experience better for my team as well as for our clients no matter what the circumstance.
Indirap Productions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Indirap Productions is a video marketing agency that specializes in branded content for sales, marketing and advertising. We operate primarily in the tech, healthcare, casino & gaming, manufacturing, real estate, retail and hospitality industries. Our products include brand overviews, case studies, lifestyle content, product and app promos, property tours, video wall content and corporate training libraries to name a handful of our offerings. The client experience is why our client s keep coming back and also why our client retention rate is close to 95%. We approach these brands from a business perspective, not as a few guys that are going to just show up and hit record. We explore the “why” in the content we produce. We want to know who the end user is, where’s this video gonna live, what are your brands goals with the content. This all plays into how we storyboard, shoot, light, animate, select the soundtrack, edit and deliver the final piece. At the end of the day it’s all custom content designed specifically for our clientele. Outside of our product, the Indirap process is why we are so successful.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is seeing the people around me happy and achieving, their life goals. It’s not about me. I always say that the chef eats last and any successful business owner will tell you the same. That’s the approach I take with my life as a whole. I know that when everyone around me is happy and excited to wake up every day, success follows.
