Meet Heather Held of Heather Victoria Held

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Held.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was introduced to calligraphy in 2003 as something to try out and I became completely obsessed with it. I studied and practiced on a daily basis and eventually started teaching locally. The local teaching launched internationally. I now own and operate my studio business designing artwork for clients worldwide and teaching intensive workshops for calligraphy guilds worldwide.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The learning curve was pretty steep for me. I do not have an art background other than my floral training. For the first year or so, I was self-taught and eventually sought out mentors and tutors who could help me along the way. As an introvert, it was difficult to begin teaching, but I found my love for sharing my craft with others helped me deal with the jitters associated with public speaking. I continue to hone my craft on a daily basis. There is always something new to explore and learn.

Please tell us about Heather Victoria Held.
I specialize in calligraphic artwork that is rooted in the Victorian era. I mainly utilize pointed pen scripts including Italian Hand, English Roundhand and Spencerian Script. I am most known for my offhand flourishing work which is the pointed pen ornamental design that usually surrounds and embellishes a pointed pen script. My work was quite different from others when I first started out.

I wanted to add a very feminine touch to the flourishes and started adding floral elements as well as gold leaf and Swarovski crystals. These embellishments are very common now, but when I first started launching out, it was unusual to see florals, glittery pigments and crystals added to offhand flourished artwork.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is visiting my Grandmother’s house. She was always so happy to see my sister and I whenever we came for a visit. Before we had our coats and shoes off she asked us what she wanted her to prepare us for dinner.

Even if we both requested completely different dishes, she would happily prepare both! Seems like so many years ago, but the joy she had in preparing food for us remains such a precious memory.
