Gino, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
For more than 50 years, Trans-O-Matic has been providing transmission repair and auto repair in the Chicago land area. We were founded in 1965 by John Bozzi an immigrant from Bari, Italy that created an industry standard in service and remanufacturing transmissions for all vehicles. We have been making sure that people seeking transmission rebuilds in Chicago or simple transmission diagnostic service in Des Plaines receive the services that they deserve. From simple rebuilds to fleet services, our trained team is dedicated to making sure your vehicle is able to perform at all times.
Over the years, we have stayed up to date so that we can continue to provide you with transmission repair in Des Plaines and the Chicago land area. We know all about computers that control modern vehicles, as well as have experience with older vehicles. Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Be prepared for all roads, indeed. When expanding to our new second location it was not an easy road at all. Rebuilding is in our nature as in rebuilding transmissions to construction of buildings. Our founder John Bozzi worked also as a building contractor on many past buildings and projects. He worked nonstop to rebuild our second location at 1500 Rand Road in Des Plaines for almost 3 years while being diagnosed with cancer. We lost John in 2014 to cancer in the middle of construction. His son Gino Bozzi continued on his dream and finished it in late 2015. We opened Trans-O-Matic of Des Plaines with great success in a new state of the art facility in early 2016. A building in high regard for high ceilings to large hydraulic lifts that can lift up to 40,000 lbs. buses from also the biggest and heaviest trucks on the road today. With that new location we still offer the same great service and quality. We are today only a few companies still expanding in the transmission and auto repair industry as it is not been an easy road with new technology for most vehicles on the road today. Trans-O-Matic is not afraid of the challenges that proceeds us on any road. Our 3rd location will be coming soon.

It’s no longer up to a back alley mechanic, those days are over. Technicians are the most valuable thing in any shop. Without greatly skilled people and the right equipment providing you with transmission diagnostics, there is no process for finding the problem on your vehicle.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Truly my favorite memory would be working for my Dad of course. No one said its easy working for family, but it is most rewarding after the fact. From my Dad teaching’s to me to sweep the floor to diagnosing a problem with wiring issues. How about reprograming a vehicles computer? To finally tearing down a transmission and putting it all back together again with more pieces then any puzzle you can buy in a store today. Who can say that? To growing it into something larger than life and with employees who are like family. That’s truly a real reward. You do end up wearing many hats eventually in a small business. It takes the most patience and never giving up no matter how bad it gets. I think when you have that moment which is very rare between a real working father and son relationship that he gives you the credit you finally deserve. It does not happen often, but when it does it’s like magic coming out of a bottle. It’s better than any amount of money, reward, or medal. At the end of the day what are we truly put on this earth to do? I would think it’s to make each other’s lives better. It comes down to great service. As my Dad would say to me many times no matter what we were going through “Doing the best we can”. Yes we do. For that is Trans-O-Matic it is truly – 50 years and counting!!!
