Meet George Titterton of Tai Ping / Edward Fields in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Titterton.

George, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was selling exhibition space and approached the Edward Fields showroom about exhibiting. The sales rep mentioned she was leaving, and I asked if I could be considered for the job. I had the job within three weeks, and that was 22 years ago!

Has it been a smooth road?
Before Tai Ping purchased Edward Fields in 2006, we had been using hand-painted renderings, carboned triplicate forms for writing quotes, and outdated tear-sheets from the 1970s. So the transition to digitally-assisted artwork, more comprehensive marketing collateral and a more buttoned-down quoting system were big steps forward. Today, of course, we are much more streamlined and cutting edge, which is what the Edward Fields (and Tai Ping) product itself has always been.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Edward Fields Carpet Makers has been a market leader in hand-tufted carpets and rugs since the 1930s. Edward Fields was a real person! He created a market for design-driven area rugs and grew the company from a New York regional business to a well-recognized American brand with showrooms across the country.

In 2006, Edward Fields joined forces with the more global Tai Ping, which has specialized in hand-tufted product since 1956. Today, the brands continue to push boundaries in hand-tufted as well as hand-knotted products. In 2012, Tai Ping purchased a French heritage brand called La Manufacture Cogolin, which makes hand-loomed rugs in the south of France.

One major point of difference for all the House of Tai Ping brands is that we own our own manufacturing, which means that our to-the-trade, custom, made-to-order business is better able to serve our demanding clients. Whether it’s hand-tufted, hand-knotted, or hand-loomed, our sales and design staffs are experts at creating custom, unique product for any project and any client.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Chicago’s Merchandise Mart is the best design center in the world. We have great foot traffic, and it’s user-friendly for the designer. It really could not be a better place to shop.
