Meet George Sandu of Transylvania Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to George Sandu.

George, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started with a small team 10 years ago as a subcontractor for some bigger companies. I used to lead the team in daily sub-contracting job that we used to do. The idea to start my own small business came when I understood that as a sub-contractor there are very limited things you can do. For e.g., your customers will not know your name and all the credit goes to the bigger contracting company. As my customers liked the job that we were doing, this motivated me to start my own small business and serve my customers with my own company. We slowly grew as customers started liking our work. Today I am at a point where I never imagined I could be 10 years ago. As an owner of Transylvania Construction, I am looking forward to growing this company, to add more value to it and keep doing the job our customers love us for.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would love to say it was a smooth road, but as everyone knows it is never easy to open a new business.

When I opened Transylvania construction, I had many challenges especially my poor English. I didn’t know many people here and had a hard time finding people who could work for me. The list of struggles continues but the important thing is that I always believed in myself. My determination to open a business was too strong to be limited by struggles.

In the beginning, customers do not trust small companies, because you cannot prove them what you did before. You have nobody reviewing your company. The only thing you can do is provide service for the best price possible so that the customers will choose you. Once you get your first customer then a second one will follow and things get better from there. But to build a trust and respect from the customers takes time. For me, it took few years. The struggle was to manage my finances for the first few years when my business was not at full speed. After a while, every customer started to recommend me to their friends and family as they liked what we were doing and the business slowly grew. In the last 10 years, we had good times and bad times, but I always believed in myself to handle every situation.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Transylvania Construction story. Tell us more about the business.
Transylvania Construction basically can do everything for your house. We offer services like General Construction, Interior remodeling, new addition, New Constructions, Flooring, Painting, Tile, Bathrooms, Kitchens Remodeling. We are known for the quality of work that we do and our customer-focused service. The fact that most of our customers are recommended by our older customers proves the spirit that drives our company forward. We are focused on providing the highest quality service and customer satisfaction. We will do everything to meet and exceed the expectations of our customers.

As a company, I am most proud of my team who work hard every day to serve our customer. It is my team’s hard work and determination that has helped this company to grow.

My company is different than any other company doing similar business because we are not just focused on getting the job done, rather we are focused on making our customers fully satisfied with the work that we have done. We do not take our job as completed until we see a smile on our customers’ faces. As a result of this, most of our customers call us back for their future home improvement needs.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck always plays important role in a business. I am lucky to have a great family that always supports me on the things that I am doing. And, I am fortunate to have great people working for me. They work as if they own this company. I always appreciate my team for all the things that they do to serve our customers.
