Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Gonzalez Dellosso.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am an artist who always loved telling stories. As a child, I spent countless hours creating storybooks recounting the tales of the lives of characters that I invented. In my teens I started drawing in pen and ink out of my imagination, I enjoyed inventing forests particular. I started college as a psychology major, but then switched to art when I saw the wonderful work of Bill Basso, who made his living as an illustrator. I then decided to transfer to the School of Visual Arts, where I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts. I studied illustration there. I did illustrate for a few years, but did not find it fulfilling, I wanted to tell and illustrate my own stories, so I decided to start studying painting and drawing at the Art Student’s League of New York. I started to exhibit my works in New York City with the Salmagundi Club, where I was a scholarship artist. I slowly exhibited with organizations like The Allied Artists of America and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in NYC. During this time I started creating my own body of work and was eventually picked by the Eleanor Ettinger Gallery in NYC. I was with them a few years until they closed and now I show my work with Harmon-Meek Gallery in Naples, FL.
Please tell us about your art.
I am a narrative artist, focusing on figurative realism. I enjoy telling stories with my figurative paintings. My subjects have included clowns, brides and homage self-portraits to historical women painters. I enjoy using my self-portrait to portray historical women artists. I have done an entire homage series dedicated to the women of art history. Some of the artists that have been the subjects of my paintings and drawings have been: Adelaide Labille Guiard, Remedios Varo, Genevieve Estelle Jones, Sophie Gengembre Anderson, Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun, Anna Vallayer Coster, Clara Peeters and many more. I hope to familiarize the public with these incredibly interesting individuals of art history and bring them the attention that they deserve. This is what I love to do, that is what people should know, I love telling stories.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge today for the artist is an overload of the senses. An artist’s life should revolve around the art, not what surrounds the art. We have so many things going on at the same time….life is so fast paced. Less is more.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can see my work at Harmon-Meek gallery in Naples, Florida. You can also view my work at my website address: www.gabrieladellossoart.com and www.gabrieladellosso.com. Please follow my Instagram: gabrielagonzalezdellosso .The best support comes from the collectors, it is always a thrill when a collector invests support in my work and acquires a work of art. It is the fuel for the artist to make more work and create something of substance. This keeps us going.
