Today we’d like to introduce you to Fabiana Goodman.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started GoldMind Arts in 2012, after learning there were no specialized art programs for older adults in Chicago. This is a rapidly growing part of the population and has unique characteristics and needs. As we begin to look at the quality of life in older adults research has proven that art programs can solve a lot of problems, and provide multiple health benefits.
In the dementia community in particular, the arts can be especially useful. My work is challenging and incredibly rewarding. The GoldMind method is based on many existing programs, such as Meet Me at MoMa and The Poetry Project, and we aim to have fun while providing opportunities to challenge participants and master new skills.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
GoldMind has experienced success and growth thanks to an increasing need for these services. It has been so wonderful to see the programs spread, often by word of mouth. Working with the older adult community, and in particular, those living with memory loss means to work within a landscape of loss.
It is reasonable to expect some inevitable decline, and difficult to lose participants. However, knowing that the art program provides joy and an escape, within this difficult field, is very rewarding.
GoldMind Arts – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
GoldMind Arts is dedicated to improving quality of life through the arts. We work with older adults, both in residential facilities as well as independent housing, providing specialized arts programming. GoldMind Arts is specialized in working with the memory loss community, including caregivers and staff.
We are very proud to meet the needs of every participant and group we work with by creating custom projects that include inter-generational programming, temporary and permanent art installations, and themed classes. We celebrate the older adult community by increasing visibility, celebrating memory and reducing stigmas. There are no other companies in the Chicagoland area with specific training and abilities for this group.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far has been while working with the residential dementia unit and a local preschool. The connections and experiences by all involved, including teachers and caregiving staff, were very impactful. The students felt very connected to the facility and the residents, and the residents were very happy to be celebrated by the outside community.
