Today we’d like to introduce you to Evan Roberts.
Evan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My early teaching experiences initially inspired me to write books. After years of observing challenges such as, unstable homes, substance abuse, and lack of positive role models, I decided to create a self-help series to help teens successfully navigate the circumstances that they faced. It took three years to learn about the publishing industry and create the book. In addition to writing for teens, shortly after my son was born, I decided to write children’s picture books. Today, the Khahari Discovers series has three books that are focused on inspiring African American boys to develop an early love for reading.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been smooth at times, but there are always challenges. The biggest challenge initially, was being able to establish my presence as a writer. It’s simple to write, but marketing and branding require extensive expertise. Since that time, the challenges have mostly been financial. Self-publishing books is an expensive process. Book production, printing, and ongoing marketing efforts demand capital.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Empowered People Press – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Empowered People Press is a publishing company dedicated to being a world leader in self-help books for teens and children’s picture books. Our mission is to empower children and teens, particularly African American youth, to develop a love for reading and to see themselves as the protagonist in literature. I am most proud of the positive responses we have received from educators, librarians, and families. I think what sets us apart is our willingness to enhance each project and having a pulse for what parents, children, and teens want most.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future include creating thirty books, speaking to 1,000+ elementary and high school students, and continuing to serve children, teens, and parents through our workshops. I am looking forward to the release of our newest children’s picture book, Khahari Discovers the Brilliance of Janae. This is a story that merges plants, microbes, and a super smart, science loving black girl. It’s our first time having a young girl as a primary character in our children’s series. Our focus is to promote an early interest in S.T.E.A.M. careers for African American girls. This book will be available in late November.
