Esam, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m a native of Logan Square. I was raised here and involved in the growth and change of the neighborhood. I currently own and operate Café Con Leche, The Harding Tavern, Red Star Liquor and the Walk In. Café Con Leche has been a Logan Square staple, known as an all-day eatery serving Latin comfort food since 2001.
The Harding Tavern, opened in 2014, is an upscale yet approachable neighborhood restaurant and bar serving lunch, brunch and dinner. Red Star Liquor is a beer, wine and liquor store serving Logan Square since 1991. The Walk In is a bar and lounge connected to Red Star Liquor serving local beer and seasonal cocktails since 2016. We are now opening a new modern Italian place this Spring.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I opened the Red Star Liquor and Cafe Con Leche, was vacant. My establishments sat alone with no businesses nearby and Logan Square was rough back then. I have always had confidence in the neighborhood and the direction it would eventually go. That’s where we are today.
Please tell us about The Walk In.
My company, One of A Kind Hospitality, is 5 establishments all within walking distance from each other and I live 5 minutes away myself. I’m known as a business owner in Logan Square. I’ve created so many jobs for people and the team I have are so kind and genuine. The team I have sets me apart from so many other business owners in itself.
All of my establishments are very approachable – they are all open on a daily basis, most hours of the day, at an affordable price point. I also enjoy giving back to the neighborhood. Schools, non-profits, Unity Park, the Alderman’s office, etc. I’m also a board member and supporter of I Am Logan Square.
