Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Hoyt.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Erin . So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
While my path to weddings was not direct, looking back it seems meant to be. In school, I studied photojournalism and completed two internships at the Miami Herald. After college, I moved to NYC where I worked as a gallery assistant and a photo researcher for a fashion magazine.
Born and raised in the Midwest, I now call Chicago home. For the last nine years, I have helped start and build a small arts organization, Filter Photo, a non-profit that focuses on professional development practices for fine art and documentary photographers and hosts the annual Filter Photo Festival.
About six years ago, I started to work my way into the industry by second shooting and assisting and eventually starting my own studio 4 years ago.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it felt a bit seamless to take my background in photojournalism and editorial work and bring it to wedding photography. I find the City to be an incredible hub of opportunity. I feel very lucky in this way!
I’ve learned along the way to stay focused on marketing and speaking directly to your ideal client. This did take a couple years to refine and adjust but when you hit the sweet spot it is so rewarding. It’s so important to be strategic about who you want to work with and making sure your styles match.
I am beyond grateful for the clients I have!
Please tell us about Erin Hoyt Photography.
I specialize in capturing timeless, romantic portraits for the modern couple.
I don’t fall in any one particular style of wedding photography avoiding labels and trends. I aspire to capture weddings with honesty and sincerity documenting the day as it unfolds.
I’ve been an avid admirer of contemporary fine art photography and consume it on a daily basis. It definitely shapes and defines the way I shoot and offers a fresh perspective that I credit to my success as a wedding photographer.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Simply growing up in Michigan on a lake. You take things for granted when they are right in front of you. I’ve always lived in close proximity to water and just remember always being in the water.
