Today we’d like to introduce you to Ericka Perry.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The idea for TSB came when my best friend was pregnant with her first child. At the time she was in Florida and I was living in IL and I wanted to gift her something for herself that would make her feel a little better. I can recall her telling me that she wasn’t feeling well and had no idea what to buy to ease common pregnancy issues like morning sickness. I decided that I wanted to send her a nice care package but when I went searching on the Internet, I couldn’t find what I was looking for.
After discovering that no one had created anything like this, I decided to create something on my own and send it to her. Once she received the package, which had a few things like morning sickness aides and stretch mark creams, she loved it! I remember going to my husband and telling him how I thought this idea could really be a business and he cheered me on. A few weeks later, I created The Stork Bag and the rest is history.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road by a long shot! I’ve faced many challenges but through each challenge, I learn what not to do and how to handle situations in the future. One of the main challenges that I’ve faced in my business is the subscription business dynamics as it relates to product curation. For us, it is important to ensure we are providing value and consistency with our Stork Bags. Since we partner with other brands, if they go out of business all of a sudden, we are forced to scramble to find a replacement product, which can pose an issue if not prepared. Since we have faced this issue in the past, we now have a system in place.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Stork Bag story. Tell us more about the business.
The Stork Bag is ‘The Best Pregnancy Gift Ever!’ We specialize in curating the perfect care packages for our pregnant customers and pride ourselves in making their pregnancy experience more special with our thoughtful packages. We attentively curate reusable care packages to align with each trimester of pregnancy as well as the postpartum period, making it easier to gift shop for pregnant women and new moms and placing the emphasis back on the deserving expectant mother. We are the only pregnancy subscription to have obtained OB/GYN endorsement and since launching The Stork Bag, we have sold to customers all throughout our nation as well as in 5 continents and 12 different countries.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan to grow my business through more partnerships and collaborations. I also want to mentor more to future female entrepreneurs on how to approach the industry. Continue to attend as many conferences as possible and read about other women in business books to keep afoot on the changing industry.
