Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Floberg.
Eric, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It started in seventh grade. Mrs. Park assigned a video project to our Spanish class. I got paired with Chris and Matt. Chris knew a lot about editing in Windows Movie Maker, so I was stoked to get to work. I marveled at all the things he could do with the software and we knocked the project out of the park. It was titled “El Hombre Telephono,” or “The Telephone Man.” We presented first, and the rest of the class convinced Mrs. Park to give everyone else a B without presenting. She complied. Thus, started my journey in video and filmmaking. Every year after that, I needed to make the best video project in every class. I was successful, not just because the videos were any good. It was because I poured my heart into the work.
Fast forward to college. I went to Illinois State University to study Special Education, and I was a part of a campus ministry. Just about every other week, I made videos for events and continued to narrow my craft. Summer came and one of my high school friends asked me to film her sister’s wedding. I hesitantly complied and was introduced to the world of work that I do now. I was enthralled. I used my camera as much as I could from that point on. I started shooting photos. People asked me to take their photos and the snowball continued to roll.
I graduated with that education degree and started teaching at that same school where I filmed that very seventh-grade project. I continued to shoot more weddings and after my third year of teaching, it became too much to balance both, so I switched to being a creative photographer and filmmaker in June of 2016, and I refuse to look back. So, stoked to be what I’m doing and so stoked to see what happens in the future.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m extremely blessed. Since I started in this line of work, I’ve never really experienced a season of not having anything to do. Sometimes, that takes sacrifice in time, money or desired tasks, but I wholeheartedly believe that doing some of the things you don’t want to do will pave the road to doing the things you do want to do.
The biggest struggle for me at this point is balancing my personal life and work. Being a self-employed creative person affords you the ability to have a flexible schedule, but I constantly WANT to work. So, it takes discipline to schedule time off, spend time with my family, and rest every once in a while.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Eric Floberg – what should we know?
I primarily photograph and film weddings. At times, I do commercial work in the realm of photo and video, but I’m extremely passionate about telling peoples’ stories and creating a nostalgia that can be recalled in the decades to come. I stray from the typical wedding photographer in that my coverage is almost completely photojournalistic. I don’t like contrived, awkward, uncomfortable portraiture. I want people to be living and engaged in what they’re doing when I capture what they’re doing. My portraiture and filmmaking tend to be different based off of unique creative approaches with lens choice, layering of exposures, musical choices, editing style, etc.
I have a deep passion for street photography and capturing history on the streets. I just started a YouTube channel to educate other creative people as well as document my own personal life.
I’m proud of being different, authentic, and totally dedicated to my clients.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being personal, and being real. Also coffee.
