Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Billimoria.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Eric. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Upon graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005, I started working for a litigation consulting firm. While working there I earned my CPA designation and after seven years, I left to work with my father at his wealth management firm.
In 2012, I started working with my father who ran a solo practice specializing in retirement planning and portfolio management. Two years later, I earned my Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) designation. In the five years that I have been in the business, I have gained a great deal of experience in a variety of different areas – client relationships, technical knowledge, practice management and the financial markets.
I am currently responsible for financial planning, income tax return preparation, and investment planning and management. My professional growth has allowed my father to give me increasing responsibility to the point where he now considers me his equal partner.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Jumping from litigation consulting to a profession in personal finance was a big hurdle.
I literally had to start over and learn everything from the ground up. My father had warned me to be patient and that it would take me at least five years before I could begin to feel comfortable with what I do. Being highly motivated, I tried to get to that point within three years. Each day brings new developments and challenges, and I am continuing to learn something new every day.
I consider myself fortunate that I was able to learn the business and the profession without having to worry about business development and making a living at the same time. Many newcomers to this profession find it extremely difficult to survive financially while simultaneously trying to develop a clientele, gain experience and knowledge and earn enough to make it through their first few years in the business. Luckily, thanks to my father, I did not have to go through all of that.
Of course, working for your father comes with its own set of problems as the lines between son and business partner tend to get blurred and occasional conflicts do come up.
