Meet Dr. Josh Zumstein of Back Safety & Wellness Center in Homewood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Josh Zumstein.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Josh. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I initially graduated college with B.A. and worked in TV for 2 years upon graduation. After working in the broadcasting field, I realized that industry was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: I wanted a career where I felt like I could make a difference in the world and help people in some capacity.

I considered several options but settled on chiropractic after shadowing our family chiropractor. I had to go back to community college to get the appropriate prereqs before I could enroll in chiropractic school, which I did while still working in broadcasting. Five years later I graduated chiropractic school.

Immediately after chiro school, I worked as an associate doctor under a successful chiropractor for a year and learned everything I needed to run my own chiropractic clinic (both good and bad things to do!). However, before I opened my own clinic I had one very important thing to do: write a book!

Before opening my own practice, I wrote a book titled “Secrets to Preventing Back and Neck Pain: 60 Ways to Protect Your Spine.” I did a year of the press–on my own–with media outlets in Chicago and Milwaukee to promote my book in hopes of the book making a name for myself before I opened my clinic.

I am now 3.5 years into running my own successful practice and look forward to continuing to make it even better for my amazing patients. My patients’ success and trust in me is what has made my business grow the way that it has. I do not advertise and rely simply on patient referrals.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
1. Insurance companies are constantly changing procedures and reimbursement, so we have to keep up with insurance billing procedures.

2. Keeping employees happy! Treating and serving patients is the easy part…..

3. Competing chiropractors. Competition is tough and some chiropractors view another office in the area as competition and sadly, do things to try and bring it down.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Back Safety & Wellness Center – what should we know?
Our office does not just perform chiropractic adjustments on our patients. We treat them as a whole. We provide lifestyle modifications, at-home exercises, blood testing analysis to see if the patient should be taking any supplements, food inflammation testing, rehab, acupuncture, and massage. Each patient also learns the “secrets” that are in my book when they become a patient,

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Believing in yourself and not being afraid to fail. I have a quote in my bedroom that I look at everyday. It reads: “The way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear.” –William Jennings Bryan.
