Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Bradley Backhaus.
Dr. Backhaus attended the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences with a specific focus on Radiologic Technology. Upon completion of his clinical internship and boards, he worked in the medical imaging department at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee. During his four years at the hospital, he gained experience in X-Ray, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology working in the Emergency, Intensive Care, and Surgical departments. Throughout his radiology career, he gained an appreciation for the treatments hospitals could offer, but also became keenly aware of the extensive void of patient knowledge of preventative care.
In an effort to help fill that void, Dr. Backhaus earned his Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) degree from National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) in Lombard, Illinois. There he learned the value of patient education and evidence-based medicine as part of a treatment plan. While in the program, he attended continuing education seminars, worked part-time in the Admissions department, and wrote a weekly blog which was featured on the University website. He was an active member of the Motion Palpation Club, Student American Chiropractic Association, and Phi Theta Kappa.
Dr. Backhaus completed his chiropractic internship at the NUHS Whole Health Center in Chicago’s South Loop. He also completed a rotation at the Chicago Salvation Army Clinic, which is a center for people struggling with substance abuse. During his internship, he earned his Acupuncture certification from NUHS. He also earned his Corrective Exercise Specialist certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
A patient-centered approach to healthcare is at the core of Dr. Bradley Backhaus’ practice philosophy. Through a detailed history, physical examination, and patient feedback, Dr. Backhaus tailors a patient’s treatment plan to fit their unique goals. Using a broad range of treatment options – including chiropractic medicine, acupuncture, physical therapy, manual therapy, massage, and nutrition – he is able to not only treat a patient’s symptoms but more importantly address the underlying cause of their condition.
Dr. Backhaus treats patients of all ages, from infants to elderly, and works with other medical specialists when co-management and/or referrals are needed.
Committed to life-long learning, Dr. Backhaus attends seminars to expand his knowledge, skills, and expertise including McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment, Webster Technique, Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage, Acupuncture, and Posture Specialist. He is an active member of the American Chiropractic Association and the Illinois Chiropractic Society and utilizes monthly webinars to keep up to date what’s new in the field.
Philanthropy is very important to Dr. Backhaus. He has volunteered for the Chicago Ride for AIDS, Chicago Marathon, Dare 2 Tri, and other races where he treated athletes before and after their events. Dr. Backhaus is actively involved with the Human Rights Campaign where he has been a member of the Chicago Steering Committee since 2014. He has also co-chaired their annual gala in 2016 and 2017, which is their largest annual fundraiser. He has also given his time and financial support to the Howard Brown Health Center and the National MS Society. Dr. Backhaus has also given community presentations on topics ranging from the chiropractic profession to general health and wellness.
In his free time, Dr. Backhaus enjoys biking, reading, gardening, and is a film and wine enthusiast.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not, but I have learned from every challenge along the way.
Graduate school was a big but rewarding challenge. Throughout out my time as a graduate student at National University of Health Sciences, I balanced my education, part-time jobs, and additional training and certifications. This was all excellent training for owning practice, which requires balancing a few different professional hats at one time.
Modern Chiropractic Chicago – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My practice, Modern Chiropractic Chicago, specializes in natural health solutions for common concerns for many people. We specialize in chiropractic medicine, acupuncture, physical therapy, manual therapy, cosmetic acupuncture, and massage therapy. We treat a variety of conditions: low back pain, neck pain, headaches, arthritis or other joint-related issues, stress/anxiety, GI issues, disc problems, sciatica, sports injuries, tendinitis, pregnancy-related pain, wellness/preventative care, and much more.
We use a combination of alternative medicine therapies to find the right treatment plan for each patient. There is no cookie-cutter treatment plan for any patient that comes in the office; each treatment plan is tailored to each specific patient’s symptoms and treatment goals.
Dr. Backhaus is certified acupuncturist and uses acupuncture to assist his patients. He uses a combination of traditional Chinese meridian therapies and more modern concepts of musculoskeletal acupuncture techniques.
In comparison to other medical offices, Dr. Backhaus spends on average an hour or more with all new patients, and on average 30 minutes or more on each follow-up visit with his patients. He takes the time to answer all patient questions fully so they leave understanding their treatment plan and goals.
I am proud to serve the Lakeview & Lincoln Park neighborhoods and the Chicago LGBTQ community!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I have 2 proudest moments of my career:
1- Opening my own practice, Modern Chiropractic Chicago in 2017! I am eager to share my practice with the Lakeview and Lincoln Park communities.
2- Co-chairing the Chicago Human Rights Campaign Gala in 2016 & 2017. As a physician, I firmly believe that you should give back to communities that you serve. I have proudly served on the Steering Committee for the Chicago Human Rights Campaign since 2014. Throughout that time, I helped organize several events, but the 2 I am most proud of are the 2016 and 2017 annual galas. With over 600 in attendance both years, we meet and exceed our fundraising goals!
