Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Cannon.
Doug, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Austin Music Center is and always has been a small, family owned and operated small business for the past 70 years. I apprenticed for the previous owner and when he retired, I bought the business from him. (1998) Previously I was a working musician. Primarily working with The Vanessa Davis Band. I play tenor saxophone.
Has it been a smooth road?
Well, there are always bumps 🙂 I think a lot of business owners would tell you since the recession and with the big box internet sales site. Business is not the same as say 2004 or so. However we learned where to tighten up and get more efficient. So presently we are holding our own. We have been fortunate to not have any major catastrophes. (Knock on wood)

This is a family business. I have had my wife of 32 years Felicia, at my side helping me with the books, billing, store design and much moral support all the way! Two years ago My son Brian came aboard and is now an integral part of the operation……..We sell, rent and repair musical instruments We deal with a lot of Chicago schools and also the western burbs……We also work with PING (Providing Instruments for the Next Generation) is a volunteer organization that provides the opportunity for all students to participate in band and orchestra in the local schools and reap the rewards of music education. Austin Music Center repairs and refurbishes instruments for PING at a discounted rate, making damaged or useless instruments available for students who might not be able to afford the expense. Austin Music Center is proud to be a part of this program. Also we work with Ravinia Festival which is a similar organization.
