Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Kowalczyk.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Donna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Over 20 years ago, I decided to start at The Chicago School of Massage Therapy, on a recommendation of a close friend. I had never received a massage in my life nor did I know anything about it. Little did I know that it would be the best decision of my life.
My career began at Salon 1800 in Lincoln Park. After changes occurred in the company, I considered starting my own practice. In 2003, DSK Massage Therapy was born in a little hair salon off Webster St. in Lincoln Park. After some time, there I migrated over to Butler Chiropractic for several years, then to my current location with Wholistic Center of the Healing Arts.
Has it been a smooth road?
Overall my journey has been positive and successful, but I did face challenges in 2008 with the economic downturn. My clients were being mindful of their spending habits and unfortunately my services were the first to be removed from their list. It was a financial struggle for several months but business did bounce back and I was able to recover. I was able to walk away from this particular struggle a stronger individual and taught me many lessons that has helped me stay successful for many years.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with DSK Massage Therapy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My practice focuses on providing massage sessions that are tailored to each client. Each session is therapeutic as well as relaxing and nurturing. I specialize in several techniques and combine them to provide the most effective work for my client. I specialize in sports massage, deep tissue, passive stretching, Myofascial, and pregnancy massage. I am also a certified Corrective Exercise Specialist and assist my clients with their workouts and consult them on proper form and function during their workouts.
I believe the one thing that sets me apart from others is that I am able to work with my clients, not only on a physical level but also on an emotional level. Couple years ago, I was trained to work with victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. This training has made me more empathetic towards individuals dealing with sensitive issues. It has also help me deal with my clients and the daily emotional stresses that we all deal with. I believe my work is both physically and emotionally healing.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The best part of Chicago is the variety you receive…in anything! Variety in food and services. There is so much to discover in our city that most of us take it for granted. The thing I like the least is traffic and parking…other than that I truly love Chicago!
