Today we’d like to introduce you to David Shelist.
David, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We started as kids clothing store in 1996. After having our daughter, Madison, my wife and I were having a hard time finding cute, fashionable clothes for kids in Chicago. Our kid’s store, Madison, and Friends were opened 6 months later. We operated that business for 18 years and added men’s and women’s premium denim in 2006. The Denim Lounge started in the basement of our kid’s store on Rush Street and now we operate our one store in Roscoe Village.
Has it been a smooth road?
Retail is always evolving. We pride ourselves in our customer service and we like to say we are the best denim fitters in Chicago. We are not selling brands, but rather well-fitted jeans for your specific body type.

Again..we are known to have the ability to fit your ass in a great pair of jeans! We don’t lie. If they don’t fit you right, let’s move on to something else. We are most proud when we hear from a new customer…” so and so told me this is the place to buy jeans!” We love when our customers give us referrals!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
In general, the mom and pop retail business is a very challenging business to be in. We love the Shop Local movement and wish our city would do more to get the residents of Chicago to Shop Local!
