Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Colman.
Pavilion is the collective vision of Deborah and Neil Kraus, both graduates of the master of fine arts program at the art institute of Chicago. From a longstanding interest in art and design, frequent buying trips to France and Italy have influenced the direction of the gallery to offer items that are not easily sourced in Chicago and United States. Postwar design has been the focus for 18 yrs. and now they are looking forward to new design that crosses boundaries and dialogues as well to the past. They sell and ship across the United States, Europe, Australia, Hong Kong and wherever you are.
Has it been a smooth road?
The business has had successful growth with the ongoing interest globally of modern, mid-century modern design, art and architecture.
We experienced a slow down during the 2008 recession and took that opportunity to look at emerging artists and design and add that to our gallery presentation.
The internet has been great and not great. Great because we have a global clientele. Not great because not as many people walk in the door as before.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Chicago is not the most forward or experimental city to be showing in art and design in our field.
It is a difficult place to establish yourself in this business as people are more conservative.
But with the increased attention to architecture and design globally I am confident that Chicago will continue to on everyone’s radar.
