Today we’d like to introduce you to Darlys Ewoldt.
Darlys, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a child, I always loved making things and drawing. Besides my parents, I had a number of teachers and mentors over the years who encouraged me to be an artist. I am thankful for each of them for their words and support throughout the years.
I was first introduced to working in metals while I was in college. It was empowering to work with torches, fire, and tools. In graduate school, I learned metalsmithing – transforming flat metal into three-dimensional objects by hammering. I loved the processes involved so it has become my preferred method of making. I occasionally make jewelry but have always been intrigued by the concept of containment. Most of my current work consists of vessels. I like making work that has an exterior visual interest but draws the observer into the interior of the form.
I have lived and worked in Chicago since 1982. I have presented my work through exhibitions, art fairs, and galleries.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I doubt that many artists can claim they have had a smooth path in their careers. It’s often very difficult to feel a sense of balance in life. It’s necessary for me to have long periods of solitude to work. It’s also important to emerge from that bubble and interact with friends, family, and do things not related to work. Making a living is also a constant consideration. There can be long periods when little or no income is derived from my artwork. I am fortunate to be able to teach classes at various institutions to offset those periods. Teaching has been a rewarding experience as well. I am happy to pass on the knowledge I have acquired, but the challenges, achievements, and personalities I encounter in the classroom help to feed my soul and thinking.
We’d love to learn more about your art career, what else should we know?
I have worked as an artist for over 30 years. I design and make vessels, sculpture, and objects in metal. I use traditional processes of metalsmithing (raising, forging, and forming) to make non-traditional forms. Most of the pieces I create are not functional but are meant as objects of contemplation. It is my intention to create work that the observer might see in a different way each time it is viewed. I am happy when people find a connection and sense of poetry in my work.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have been learning some methods of working with glass during the past couple of years. It’s been in an interesting challenge as it puts me back to being a novice in using a different material. I have completed a couple of works incorporating glass elements into the metal sculptures. I intend to continue to investigate the translucent properties of glass in combination with metal. I am also designing more work intended for the wall. Stay tuned!
