Today we’d like to introduce you to Daphne Walsh.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My sister and brother could draw and I hated my drawings so I wanted a camera, I finally got my own at about 20 from my then fiancée. I failed to tell him I wanted a Polaroid camera and what I got was a 35mm camera.so I had to learn how to use it. I took a class at hull house and later studied photography at Columbia College. After college I worked in large format catalog studios assisting in table top photography which was to me pretty boring. I wanted to photograph people. I went on to assist wedding photographers. After a period of time where I didn’t photograph at all I started to work as a nanny and I bought my camera to work with me. I became interested again in photographing people without homes. My father was homeless and I used to follow homeless men to see if one might be my dad. All I got was yelled at by them. So I decided to photograph the homeless men and women.my newest project is women.
Please tell us about your art.
I make photographs of people mostly. I meet them on the street or post adds looking for people or just my friends and acquaintances. I’m looking to make the most beautiful portrait of someone. I usually find a location and photograph someone at the location. I want to make something beautiful. I feel like the world always needs more beauty to keep it going I know it keeps me going when I see something beautiful.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I define success if I’m shooting. Any action is a success to me. I love it when what I see in my mind’s eye shows up in the picture or is even close to what I see. Also I think it’s important just to do the work and let people decide for themselves what they think.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’m showing at Agitator Gallery at present 1112 N Ashland Ave. you can see some of my work at my website.
