Meet Daniel Cullen of Domicile Consulting in Logan Square

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Cullen.

Daniel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After a couple of decades in construction and inspection related work I hired on with a home inspection company in 1997. After 3 years working for that company I went off on my own. Over the last 17 years Domicile Consulting has grown from one person to 12 or so. We’ve accomplished that growth by doing two things; performing extremely thorough inspections and writing highly detailed reports. We believe every home buyer and home owner deserves to know how to make their home safer, more comfortable, more efficient, and more durable. Simple stuff when you break it down. Our motto is Look Closer, Think Further.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No such thing as a smooth road in small business is there? We’ve had challenges in finding the knowledgeable and experienced inspectors we need in order to provide the absolute highest level of service to our clients. We have been blessed in that way though and we have a pool of 10 top-notch inspectors with architectural and building experienced that is unparalleled in the industry. We also face a lot of push-back from real estate agents and brokers who label us as ‘deal-killers’ and who try to blacklist us in the industry. Fortunately, our clients do such a great job of promoting our work that the craven R.E. agents have little effect on our business.

Domicile Consulting LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We perform pre-purchase residential real estate inspections, energy audits, indoor air quality assessments, commercial property inspections, structural evaluations and a number of ancillary activities. I’m proud of the team we’ve assembled and I’m proud of the people we’ve helped during the home buying process. I’m proud of our Yelp and Angies List reviews too because they represent the gratitude our clients feel for our work.

Our people set us apart from others in our local industry. There are a number of good inspectors working in the Chicago area but no one has a team like us. We have architects, contractors, engineers, etc. on our team and we provide the highest level of service of any inspection company working in Chicagoland today.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m not proud really but I am happy or pleased with our growth and the accolades we’ve received. It’s important for me to be humble because in reality, I’m only one of a dozen people who have brought Domicile Consulting to this level of performance. I’m thrilled every day with the team we’ve put together. I guess there’s just a little bit of pride in that.
