Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Chapman.
Dan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Sunrise was founded in 1961 by my Mom & Dad out of their experience of restoring their health by changing their diets. Most specifically my Mom who was very sick in the 1950’s experiencing significant fatigue, anxiety and depression. She trying many different things to change the way she felt with little results, until it was suggested that she look at her diet. Without much expectation, she was amazing at how quickly she started to feel better by making what seemed like simple changes.
Over time her health improved dramatically and not just her, but many others that she was coaching to improved health. They started Sunrise Health Foods in 1961 with a mission of offering healthy food for their friends and family. I grew up in the aisles of this store and fell in love with helping people change their lives. We have been in the same location in Lansing, IL for over 50 years and now have 4 locations to serve more friends. Our mission at Sunrise is the same today, to serve our community offering healthy food and education to help you improve your health. We offer organic foods, amazing fresh juices and smoothies, and supplements too.
We are experts in healthy food and herbal solutions to help people live optimally healthy lives. In 2005, I founded Redd Remedies, an herbal supplement company specializing in herbal formulas to solve health issues. Redd Remedies has 37 formulas and is now sold in over 3,000 health food stores around the US as well as internationally.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Coming up on 57 years in business we have had our share of difficulties. My parents were pioneers for sure. They were committed to helping people. Running a health food store was not a profitable endeavor. We had a store burn down in the 1980’s, now we are operating with competition all around and in Cook County where the property taxes are out of control. Even so, we run a “healthy” business as we continue our focus on doing what is best for our customers.
Sunrise Health Foods and Redd Remedies – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sunrise Health Foods is a healthy grocery store offering many healthy selections including organic product, juice bars, local grass-fed beef, truly free range chicken and eggs, many options for those on special diets, some amazing body care products and of course sound advice on all of the supplements we offer. Redd Remedies focuses on formulating herbal supplements to nourish the body specific to the health issue you are concerned about. This approach of nourishing the body allows our products to work quickly with your body for lasting results. We support all the body systems needed to get real results because our body is made up of many parts which are all connected. There are always multiple body systems involved in every health issue. By addressing your body as a whole gets to the core of your health issue. And lastly we create balance in your body. This may not sound overly exciting, but a body in balance is in perfect health. A balanced body has incredible energy physically and mentally. You have no symptoms to worry about and feel great.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We have always marked our success as having happy customers. We believe that if we prioritize our customers in our decision making that will result in a healthy business for us long term. We focus on those products that get results or buy that ingredient that might cost more but we know that healthy food choices is what our customers are looking for and results when they buy one of our supplements.
