Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Williams.
Cynthia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Before I got into holistic healthcare, I was a Registered Nurse working in the Emergency Department. I loved being a nurse, but my views on how healthcare should be, seemed to differ from all of my co-worker’s views. I didn’t like pushing a bunch of medications and I didn’t like how the patients and their families were treated. I decided I wanted to leave the hospital and do something holistic that would mesh well with being a nurse. I started researching holistic modalities and found great interest in acupuncture and herbology. I enrolled in an Oriental Medicine program and my passion for holistic medicine grew deeper and deeper. I always knew that I would further my nursing education, it was just a matter of when I would start. I started a Family Nurse Practitioner program about 4 months after I graduated from the Oriental Medicine program. I graduated from the Family Nurse Practitioner program May 2017 and now I’m making plans to expand.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been a smooth road for me. I started the business without having ever taken any proper business classes. Everything I know has been self-taught. I play every role in my business from the marketer to the practitioner. I started the business immediately after graduating from the Oriental Medicine program, but before starting the Family Nurse Practitioner program. So within 4 months, I was up and running. I started the business with my own savings, since at the time, I didn’t qualify for any loans because I was working way less than part-time and I didn’t have anyone that could just loan me several thousands of dollars. I started full-time in the Family Nurse Practitioner program, but eventually had to go part-time because I was spread too thin with trying to grow the business, raise 2 children, plan a wedding, and still work occasionally to keep up my skills as a Registered Nurse. Things are starting to get a little easier since finishing school, but there are still challenges I face as I am in the expansion process. There isn’t anything about my journey that I would change. All of my challenges have further fueled my passion and I know that it is all worth it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Holistic Integrative Wellness Centre – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Currently in my practice, I offer acupuncture, herbs/supplements, cupping, and nutritional coaching. I have recently added some practitioners to the practice and also offer yoga and massage therapy. I am in the process of also adding primary care, lab services and a few other services to the practice as well. One of the things I love doing as a part of my practice is making personalized products for people using herbs and essential oils. I make various products for various ailments. They ask for it and I make it! There are many things going on behind the scenes and I am very excited for this expansion. When you come to Holistic Integrative Wellness Centre, you are getting something unique. Once the entire expansion process is complete, my clients will be getting quality care from a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Licensed Acupuncturist. They will be able to have all of their holistic healthcare needs met, while also getting their primary care needs met. Overall, my clients will have lower health care costs and a high level of patient satisfaction due to the focus on patient-centered care and preventative care.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In addition to adding several new services to the business while enhancing my current services, I will also be moving to a larger suite as well as keeping the current suite I have. Everything is going to take place prior to the end of the year and I am very excited!
