Cortlon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago and dealt with the everyday struggles that most kids do growing up in that area. I was focused to make it out and with a lot of hard work and dedication to school, I was accepted to the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign where I would move on to get my undergrad and Master’s Degree in Accountancy. I have always been good with numbers, especially with money because I was curious on why we never had any!
After my schooling, I went to work for one of the top accounting firms in the world “KPMG”. After a two year tenure there I decided to move more into the Finance industry to broaden my knowledge. After working in both industries for a number of years I realized that there was an extreme lack of knowledge when it comes to personal finance.
Personal Finance is a topic that we are never taught in school or anywhere else for that matter. After doing some thorough research I found that not many firms were addressing this issue of educating their clients on personal finance aspects and how their money works. This was especially true for individuals who didn’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest in a wealth management firm.
After all of this, I decided to start my firm “Cofield Advisors” where I would offer comprehensive financial planning over all aspects of my client’s finances. And best of all, I wouldn’t restrict my services to anyone that wanted them. Our mission is to help bring peace of mind to individuals when it comes to their financial picture and helps them develop a plan to achieve their future financial goals.
Has it been a smooth road?
After starting my business I learned very quickly that this would not be an easy road to travel. The financial industry is one of the most un-trusted industries that we have in America. From the multitude of Ponzi schemes that have taken place over the years to the various financial crisis that we have had, individuals have become completely reluctant to the profession.
So it is my responsibility to overcome the last 100 years of negative connotations that the industry has earned and demonstrate to the community that there’s a financial planner that wants to help you and that have your best interest in mind. This will be a tough task to overcome, but I am extremely passionate about helping other financially and will give it my all to change the view of this profession!
