Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Lyons.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up way out in Santa Fe and moved to Chicago in 2001 to study photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In Santa Fe my neighbor Eric was a commercial photographer, so I grew up watching Eric work in his studio. I shot everything under the sun when I first finished college but eventually found that weddings were what I most loved to shoot.
Has it been a smooth road?
Scaling my business was an issue in the beginning. I went from 17 weddings my first year to 30 the next, and that increase caused some issues in my post-production process. These days I am most challenged in finding the best freelancers, but I spend a lot of time on it and have a great crew.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Colin Lyons Wedding Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
In the end I’m probably most proud of some of the incredible thank-you emails I get. I shoot weddings, and while 95% of them are in Chicago, I do travel a few times a year, mainly for people who know my work and really want to spend their wedding day with me. My work is very visual, and you can visit my website to see the images. I also own a custom-built photo booth device called Goldpop that really impresses the guests.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Chicago is the best city to shoot in terms of the look. The way the river carves a path through the buildings is so epic for photos. Chicago traffic on wedding days has caused some annoyances, but I’m hoping for Uber helicopter one day!
