Meet Christina Corso of Christina Corso Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Corso.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started practicing yoga in college. I went to a small school in Cambridge Massachusetts where I was recruited to play soccer. From a young age, I have always been involved in sports and enjoyed the ability to be completely present with myself even though I was still supported by a team. As I got older, I realized that soccer was my moving meditation. It wasn’t until I started practicing yoga that I realized many of the stretches and warm-ups we did to prepare for a game were yoga poses.

After my first year in college, I hated my experience and quit playing soccer. Mentally, I was in a place where I was dealing with depression and anxiety and yoga made it easier to deal with those emotions. I was in such a rut and my Mom really wanted me to go back to school. Since I was from New York, I wanted to try living in another city and moved to Chicago to attend school at DePaul. When I arrived in Chicago, in order to ground myself, I knew I needed to find a yoga studio to practice at. I took the redline all over the city until I found a place that worked for me.

Eventually, I reached a point on my yoga path where I wanted to know more about why yoga made me feel better. I enrolled in my first 200hr. teacher training not intending to teach but to soak in information about the practice and its history. I’ve been teaching full time in Chicago ever since!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes and no. Like most yoga teachers, when I first started, I was running around the City teaching 25+ classes a week and barely getting by. I was still in college at DePaul and studying sociology. It never really occurred to me until school was over that I would concentrate on teaching yoga full-time.

Now, eight years later, I’ve experienced working with companies that I don’t jive with and became confident in my teaching to branch out more on my own. I use a space in Wicker Park where I work with private clients and host events. I’ve lead yoga retreats in India, Cabo San Lucas, Michigan, and Galena. I also teach at two great studios that are supportive of my teaching and allow me to be creative and myself!

Christina Corso Yoga – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in alignment based classes with an abundant variety of props. Sometimes when students come to take my classes they joke about the prop list for the day. “Two blocks, a blanket, a strap and the kitchen sink”.

When I teach, I want to create a space where students at all levels feel included in the practice no matter what injury or ailments they are showing up with. This style of yoga has been instilled in me from my own teachers and I’ve learned to understand the human body in a different light when it comes to making space and holding shapes.

I also want people to have fun! Life can get so serious at times and I think it’s important to be playful and laugh a bit. I’ve been told I have top-notch dad jokes. 🙂

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
It’s a day to day thing. If you feel good about your work and yourself that’s success to me.
