Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsey Hoss.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Chelsey. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I was little, I loved to write. It wasn’t until a high school film class that I found a love for photography. It definitely didn’t come easily to me at first. I kept practicing, and stayed after school almost every day to develop film. It was in the darkroom that I developed an appreciation for photography. It was a way for me to tell people’s stories, and no words were needed.
In college, I photographed my cousin’s wedding and a few families I knew. Little by little my business began to grow. I realized how much I loved telling people’s stories through photos. I discovered that what would take me pages to write, could all be told in one photograph. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a photographer. My favorite part about being a photographer is capturing a couple or family in a way that authentically shows their personalities and the love they have for each other. There is something so amazing about how one photograph can make us appreciate those we have in our lives that much more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Although I know many of us wish this, there is not one clear path in life to a successful business. Every business is different, and what worked for one individual may be completely different for another. When I was starting out, this was a hard lesson to learn. I wanted my business to grow overnight, but things do not work that way.
I reached out to other photographers, and to my surprise, many of them were willing to share advice. This really helped me realize that the struggles I was facing were what many other successful people in the industry had also dealt with. This really changed my outlook, and helped me refocus on growing my business.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Chelsey Joy Photography – what should we know?
I am a portrait and wedding photographer who specializes in capturing images that evoke real emotion, tender moments, and joy. With a background in journalism, I focus on using images to tell each family or couple’s story.
I am known for providing each client with a personal and genuine experience. I want my clients to see me as a friend, and I really get to know each family or couple that I meet. This helps me create images that capture the essence of who they are as a couple or family.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think one of the most important qualities to my success is that I am self-motivated. One of the best and most challenging things about owning a business is that there is no boss there to micromanage you or set deadlines. You are in control of your business, but at the same time you are also the only one that is accountable when something doesn’t work out.
Being a self-motivated person has really helped me to grow my business. I set goals for myself each day, and also goals for the year.
