Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Campbell.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I actually started doing flowers as a delivery driver for a more traditional mom-and-pop store. The idea of doing something with my hands – in this case physically moving flower arrangements and driving them around to high rise buildings- sounded appealing.
Eventually, the manager & shop owner took me in as sort of an apprentice in the shop and I slowly learned the names of each flower and design. I’m pretty sure I used to drive my manager crazy asking what each flower was and then spelling it out so I could remember. a-l-s-t-r-o-m-e-r-i-a.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are challenges in every career path. For me personally, I feel that I am slow on the uptake but once I get something, I really excel. It just takes a lot of patience for the people who have to bare with me as I am learning new skills.
Dirty Boots Flowers – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Dirty Boots Flowers is a wedding and events company that specializes in more of a natural or wildflower look. We like to use a lot of greenery and textures in our designs. Dirty Boots also has a small urban farm between Humboldt and Garfield Park. This year we are really hoping to expand the farming aspect of the business.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Last year I designed a bridal bouquet for a woman who got married at Starved Rock and she used the bouquet as inspiration for a tattoo that she got on her arm.
