Today we’d like to introduce you to Callie Lipkin.
Callie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
An unforgettable trip to China before college shifted my focus from a career in engineering to one in photography. After graduation I began my career in photojournalism, working for a number of newspapers, including Aurora’s Beacon-News, and the Boston Globe. In 2001, I began the next chapter starting my business as a freelance photographer.
In 2005, my husband started working with me full time and after we had our second child in 2014 I started hiring my current staff. I currently have three full-time employees and we spend our time shooting advertising campaigns, editorial assignments, and corporate branding images both in Chicago and out of town. I have been working for the past three years on a personal project about dads that has taken me around the US, back to China and most recently to Iceland.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! There was no roadmap for starting my business.
Organizations like the APA and ASMP helped introduce me to others in the industry who I learned from but much of my journey has been trial and error. The biggest obstacle for freelance photographers is two things – finding your personal vision and finding clients. Success is difficult to achieve without them.

My background in photojournalism feeds my dedication to a spontaneous and true-to-life aesthetic. Clients come to me when they want to solve a problem and need an authentic visual solution for their brand.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Growing my staff and forming a team of people that can help me execute my vision has been my greatest accomplishment.
