Meet Bryan Sperry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Sperry.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Chicago. I come from a family of artists and muralists. As a child, I was always suspect of systems of control and wanted to be free. I realized we were born into systems that control us and steal our soul and wanted to avoid that at all costs. So I used art as my weapon to make people aware of this control grid to awaken the minds of the masses.

Please tell us about your art.
My new sculptural series is called The Warriors of the Apocalypse. This series of artworks has a science fiction narrative that takes place in the year 3095. It is a post-apocalyptic world where man and machine unite to form a hybrid super soldier to fight against tyranny and oppression perpetrated by the governments, corporations, and banks that have destroyed the planet. The characters portrayed in Warriors of the Apocalypse sculptures spread truth and light in a futuristic world where humanity is fighting to survive.

The life-size cyborg figures are made from recycled elements from the urban landscape.

I make this work as an awareness campaign to illustrate how controlled we are through media, propaganda, and government.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Due to new platforms of technology an artist’s work can now be seen with the click of a button. The role of the artist hasn’t really changed, but many more artists have a voice than ever before. Artists should enlighten others in ways our current news media and other mass communication platforms cannot. Artists should make people think, question everything, question the narratives that are being sold to us, express truth, and see through agents of deception. The role of the artist is to awaken the hearts and minds of society and to questions systems of control.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Every Second Friday from 6-10 pm, my Pilsen gallery, House of the Apocalypse, is open to the general public. The gallery is located at 1908 S. Halsted Street on the first floor. People can support my work by visiting our space and buying a sculpture for their living room or office lobby.
