Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Hughes and Adrienne Hughes-Jackson.
Nzuri Body Essentials is a luxury bath and body care line of products created by a mother-daughter duo, Adrienne and Brittany. Both mother and daughter had a few skin concerns such as eczema and dark spots. They started mixing and making homemade scrubs and soaps with essential oils which over time has improved their skin. They had no idea that their love for natural ingredients and essential oils would spark a desire to create their own line of products. In September 2016, Nzuri Body Essentials was created. Initially starting with handmade labels and through trial and error, they managed to become vendors for various events across the city of Chicago and surrounding areas; their biggest vending event yet was the Black Women’s Expo in 2017. Through a couple of label changes and website makeovers, Nzuri Body Essentials has recently officially rebranded with a new logo, colors and website. The rebranding also included new products and packaging. Nzuri Body Essentials is gentle to all skin types, the line consists of body soufflés, exfoliating scrubs, bath and shower gels and lotions, soaps and more. Their products will allow you to spoil your skin with salon-grade services from the comfort of your home or even on the go.
Currently, the mother-daughter duo is furthering their education, Brittany is studying Esthetics and all aspects of skin care, while Adrienne is studying Aromatherapy, allowing them to blend the right essential oils perfect for your skin. Esthetics and Aromatherapy make the perfect duo in creating luxurious products gentle to the skin. The dynamic mother-daughter duo has many more things in store.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it certainly has not been a smooth road. We’ve run into many obstacles while starting and maintaining Nzuri Body Essentials. Initially, we lacked a lot of knowledge in regards to the proper steps to take when starting a business. We also encountered many issues with creating a website. In the beginning stages, we weren’t able to afford the cost of a nice website, so we spent hours and days trying to figure out how to create one ourselves.
When being a business owner, you meet many people and some may not have good intentions but will sell you a dream. We had to learn how to distinguish genuine and like-minded fellow entrepreneurs.

Nzuri Body Essentials is a luxury bath and body care line of products that consists of body souffles, exfoliating body scrubs, lotions and shower gels. What sets us apart from many other brands is that we are a mother and daughter, studying aromatherapy and esthetics. We are personally known for our genuine personality and bubbly spirit. Our products are known to be effective and relaxing for all skin types. We are most proud of the quality of our products and the awesome customer experience we offer to our customers. We also have a podcast discussing fashion and beauty tips and trends, current events, politics and more. We are in the process of starting a non-profit organization to give back to the women within our communities and worldwide.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
We have always had a close relationship as mother and daughter. When Brittany was a little girl, as a single parent, we didn’t have much money to go places. On many Saturday mornings, we used to play a game that we called “girlfriend apartment”, where we pretended that our kitchen was an upscale restaurant our living room was the movie theater (where Barney was the featured movie, weekly) and our bedroom was our apartments. All of Brittany’s dolls were her children! We spent hours laughing and enjoying our weekend.
