Meet Brittany Boardman of Muthaflippas in Northwestern, IN and Lincoln Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Boardman.

Brittany, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My parents made their living by flipping houses in the Northwest, IN area. They’ve flipped houses since the late ’70s. My dad Stephen would do the demo work and installations and my mom Linda would do the painting, landscaping, and staging. They would both help each other in every area and do the shopping for supplies, etc. together. My parents were so close my entire life that they even shared a cell phone! They were never apart. So when my dad passed away from cancer about two years ago, my mom realized she could only sort of find happiness in continuing to do house flip projects. But she couldn’t do it alone. My sister changed her career and I work in freelance on film and television shows, so we made ourselves available to her. We decided to join her in purchasing some houses and started the Muthaflippas!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It really hasn’t been a smooth road, as I’m sure any new business has its bumps as well. It was very emotionally tough taking on these projects without our dad around for the first time and going through each house realizing we didn’t know how to do some of the projects he was able to take on, such as a full-kitchen cabinet installation. My mom, sister, and I also had to figure out what projects we were each best at doing and divide the work equally. On top of that, during our very first house flip together as the Muthaflippas, my sister was pregnant with my adorable nephew, Stephen! So we had to figure out what projects she could also do safely and not exhaust herself too much. It was a huge learning process with a lot of tears and a lot of bonding.

Please tell us about Muthaflippas.
Muthaflippas is a small house investment/flipping company comprised of my mom Linda Boardman, my sister Michelle Cogswell, and me. We purchase smaller starter or retirement homes and condos in Indiana, Chicago, and Florida, that need some TLC, rehab them, and sell them for profit. We’re proud of our company because we’re made up of strong women doing some jobs that are very stereotypically taken on by males. We value family above all and we do all of this to honor our late dad/Linda’s husband Stephen. Muthaflippas is sort of like a phoenix company that arose after losing someone we loved so much.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think there’s anything we would have done differently! Maybe watched more YouTube videos on how to install cabinets properly the first time 🙂
