Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridget Fiscus.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Bridget. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Freedom Yoga started as a desire to bring the Detroit style of yoga to Chicago and surrounding areas! Free flowing, fresh vibrant vinyasa classes with loud and energetic tunes.
Back in 2012, this was just the idea of an exciting adventure between friends. Over the next 5 years things evolved, changed and adapted, but the ‘why’ behind our intention is still the same. At Freedom Yoga, our desire will always be to teach our students to feel their bodies, tune into sensation and soften into challenges on and off the mat.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
So many struggles along the way!
Freedom yoga was an idea for years. What started as a conversation between friends, turned into free pop-up yoga in the park. Challenges got in out way, lives changed and the idea to start this studio was set aside for a few years.
One day, fours years down the road the opportunity to put plans into motion presented itself. A studio Bridget taught at was open and available for Freedom Yoga to grow into. With the assistance of many helping hands, the studio opened in 2016. Shortly into the startup of the studio, management unexpectedly changed. Yogis are a flexible group and although the founding members of the business have evolved, our intention has never changed. As a result, an amazing community has begun to flourish!
Just recently a new shift has occurred and the studio is in the process of an unexpected move. Sometimes the best changes are the unexpected ones and we are leaning into this new shift with open arms and open hearts!
Freedom Yoga – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Our classes are fresh, vibrant, and vigorous. With a focus on great music and free-flowing sequencing, each student is guided through breath and movement allowing for opportunities to extend beyond personal limitations or modify at any time.
At Freedom Yoga, it is our desire to teach each student the connection between breath and body, to learn to trust their own intuition and feel each posture rather than find ‘perfect’ alignment. ‘Using the asana to get into your body, versus using the body to simply get into the asana.
We offer a variety of classes with the intention for each student to find the freedom to get into their bodies through the use of yoga postures, breathe and movement. From free-flowing Vinyasa to alignment focused Ashtanga we have a variety of classes including Rock N Flow, Restorative, and Yoga Nidra. Our classes are diverse and our teachers share a wealth of knowledge.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success within our studio looks like a community of happy challenged yoga students, who find ease in practicing yoga off the mat as well as on. Our intention in teaching yoga is to allow each student to become their best teacher, to listen to their bodies and become less reactive in moments of challenge and stress.
Yoga is the art of listening and connecting, even when life is loud and distracting. When our students tap into themselves and in turn become more empathic towards others – when they can soften into stillness amidst chaos – that’s the magic of this practice.
That’s when we start to see a return on all the love and positive energy we put into our classes. A connected mindful yoga community is success.
