Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Roter and Tom Leiber.
Brian and Tom met when they were both employed by a local roofing company in the west suburbs. They quickly learned how to make a difference with quality customer service, educating the homeowner and personal attention. The homeowners always complimented them regarding their knowledge, caring attitude and doing the job right which wasn’t always the case with other teams.
With Brian’s 15+ years of construction and general contractor experience and Tom’s 20+ years of property financing and capital improvements projects, they decided to create ProTek Construction to provide the level of expertise and service that homeowners could benefit from, gain a positive result, and proactively refer business because of a great reputation
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a new business in a highly competitive field is exciting but usually comes with some struggles here and there. We are very selective about who we hire and who our suppliers are since our reputation is directly connected to our brand. Timing is of the essence!
We had expectations that most staff and crew members would have the same work ethics as our own but realistically had to accept that a few workers would not have the same level of dedication and commitment needed to stay on with ProTek.
Training crews to do the quality work we need with every project takes time and effort. Growing pains definitely were felt while building enough crews to be at the level we needed them to be. Once we have the skill level and competence needed, we focus on retention of those employees so the high level of output is consistent for our customers.
Weather is always an obstacle. We can turnaround a roof replacement in 1-2 days depending on the square footage and pitch but when Mother Nature wants to join the party, we have to adjust accordingly.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We measure our success by our customer testimonials. Our customers are VERY important to us for the long term. Incoming referrals are a great criteria to gauge how we are doing in the market place. If the customer feels 100% comfortable telling their friends and family to call ProTek, we know that how we take care of our customers speak volumes. Our two main customer segments – individual homeowners and associations working with property managers – typically ask someone they trust for recommendations. We want to be one of the top two on that list. Once the homeowner or board member sees our work and understands our value of skill and education we bring to the table, projects fall into place.
We are proud of fact we don’t have single bad rating or review from our customers. We will only use quality products that are supported by long term warranties so the customer is protected. Ensure 100% customer protection, then we see a value that is passed to the homeowner. The quality level of the products and service is how we gauge the success of the project. - Siding $300-1000 per square
- Gutters downspouts $4.50-7 per foot depending on size
