Meet Bianca Cardenas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Cardenas.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
From a young age, I have always had an interest in art and could never see myself doing something that was not art related. I grew up in a Mexican – American household. I was raised to never forget where I came from. Although there were moments I felt ashamed of who I was and tried to hide that part of myself. I am currently trying to find who I am. I am embracing who I am becoming and I am using my creativity to express my journey.

Please tell us about your art.
My current body of work is using a combination of minimalism and trompe l’oeil. My subjects are different surfaces from my past that have built who I am as a person. Whether it is a memory of a paint peeled wall or a marble floor. I experiment with the shapes of support and manipulation of material. Sometimes, the canvas is cut to resemble an object or painting is built up to mimic a texture. The materiality of the work gives the viewer a more visceral connection to the subjects.

Who I am is greatly influenced by different recollections of my culture, family, and friends. I recreate textures and surfaces to represent a memory or lesson I have learned with each surface. I want my audience to appreciate and find the beauty in an everyday object that they would usually take for granted. Through my exploration, I’ve learned to appreciate the subtle effects these depictions have had on my life.

What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I think artist today are very fortunate to have social media and so many different ways to share their artwork, because of this it is easier to connect within our art community. I think the art scene in Chicago is growing and there are always shows and events going on, it is just the matter going, and meeting new people. We need to continue supporting our local artist and help share how talented our city is.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
The best way to view my work is through my website. I am going to be working on some new and exciting pieces soon and will be sharing on my Instagram.
