Meet Dr. Benjamin P. Caughlin of Dermatologic, Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Benjamin P. Caughlin.

Dr. Caughlin, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Dr. Memar and myself (Dr. Caughlin) started this multidisciplinary practice to offer patients well rounded and diverse care. Dr. Memar is a cosmetic surgeon who is dermatology trained and I am a plastic surgeon trained first in head and neck surgery followed by a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The goal of our practice is to offer patients a unique experience from the first consultation though the preoperative assessment and continuing to their surgical care. Both doctors are involved in the entire process and we do our best to make patients comfortable. Our goal is to have happy patients.

We pride ourselves in the ability to offer most procedures under local anesthesia which is ultimately safer and has a shorter recovery period than when having to go to sleep.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
So far so good. Patients are responding well and we are growing as we had hoped.

Our main struggle is getting the word out there that we are here to treat patients and to offer top notch care!

We are most proud of the way our patients are responding to the practice. When we have happy patients we are happy. We now focus mainly on procedures that make our patients happy. We have learned what we are good at and what gives great results. Those are the procedures we focus on.

I do mainly facial rejuvenation surgeries such as eyelift, blepharoplasty, facelifts, facial resurfacing, fat transfer and laser treatments. Dr. Memar focuses more on the body and is doing liposuction, fat transfer, Brazilian butt lifts and breast augmentation with fat.

We consider ourselves “the fat guys” because we have developed a unique way to transfer fat for cosmetic reasons.

We are the only practice in Chicago that offers this unique combination of a cosmetic surgery along with a facial plastic surgeon. We are proud of this and are doing our best to take advantage of the opportunity.

What were you like growing up?
I always wanted to be an architect. When I was in college I bailed on that idea though because the market was hurting bad. Surgery seemed like the next best option. I enjoyed working with my hands building and painting.

My mother is a nurse and my father has a construction company. They both played pivotal roles in my decision to become a surgeon.
