Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Kinsinger.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in the small Midwest town of Washington, IL. With a skip in my step and a shine in my smile, I moved to the big city to become famous and save the world! I learned to sing and dance alongside the other orphans in hope that one day, we would see our names in lights (those of us that had names). I kickstarted my first album, became a music director at IO, and had sex for the first time.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve always preferred a rocky road over a soft serve.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ben Kinsinger story. Tell us more about the business.
I am searching for the stuff that binds music to narrative.
As a music director at IO, I have to spontaneously compose music to accompany spontaneous theater. The music becomes a character in the scene. Sometimes I play the strait man, holding a dramatic gravity taught against a ridiculous choice. Sometimes I am the driving beat energizing an abstract visual embodiment. Sometimes I create space for quick quips and smart licks. In all moments I must be ready to adapt and shift to the best supporting role I can be.
Similarly, I try to invite a sense of unique spontaneity with my composition performances. My latest piece, Orpheus, seeks to integrate new artistic contributors with each new performance, transforming the piece with new perspectives. Video reacts to music. Music reacts to video. Choreography reacts to music. Video reacts to Choreography. The latest evolution of Orpheus will arrive this winter.
